The Office of Youth Ministry has been working on logistics surrounding a Diocesan Pilgrimage to World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid, Spain! We are excited about this global event that will be happening next year and are more excited about helping bring the youth of our Diocese together to share in this experience. An information meeting was held in late February explaining the cost breakdowns, a tentative payment schedule and both pilgrimage itineraries. The information from this meeting can be found below

A Prayer for World Youth Day:
we consecrate to you the World Youth Day in Madrid in 2011. Guide and protect Pope Benedict and all the leaders for the Church. Inspire and direct all those leading and planning the World Youth Day. Unite and protect then by your fatherly care.
Amen
Lord Jesus Christ,
before you ascended to the Father, you promised to send your Holy Spirit so that we might be your witnesses to the end of the earth. Bless and multiply the efforts of all our staff and volunteers. Help us to take up our cross and follow you.
Amen
Holy Spirit,
pour out your grace on Spain and grant to it a New Pentecost. Make of this land a true place of welcome for the young people of the world. Grant the young people who come conversion of life, a deeper faith, and love for all. Enable them to build a new civilization of life, love and truth. Make them true witnesses to your power and grace.
Amen.

History of Word Youth Day
- World Youth Day was established by Pope John Paul II in 1986 as an annual event to reach out to the youth of the world. He was inspired by massive gatherings of young people in Rome celebrating the Youth Jubilee in 1984 and at the United Nations International Year of Youth in 1985. He wanted to bring together youth Catholics from around the globe to celebrate and learn about their faith on a more regular basis. Pope John Paul II saw WYD as a way to reach out to the next generation of Catholics, to demonstrate confidence in them, to rejuvenate the Church and ensure that the core teachings of Christ are transmitted and lived. World Youth Day is a pilgrimage of faith, where young people from diverse backgrounds meet and experience the love of God. The first World Youth Day was held in Rome in 1986 on Palm Sunday. Each year since, World Youth Day has been celebrated at a Diocesan level on Palm Sunday.
